I first became interested in fitness watching Hulk Hogan saturday mornings with my Dad. It sounds ridiculous, but it's the truth. I was also influenced by the posters of Arnold my cousin had in the basement of his house, and of course by the weights he had that I couldn't even begin to budge. I was always very active throughout high school with sports, but didn't become serious about lifting until my first year of college, it was my way of "recovering."
Why I Love It:
I made a promise to myself to never be a "weak" woman.
How I Stay Motivated:
I love the fact that my nieces are still amazed by my muscles. My family is a HUGE motivator.
My long term goal is to understand my body. It has been a difficult process of "recovering" from an eating disorder that surfaced about 10 years ago. The disorderd eating coupled with the issue of hypothyroidism has sent me down numerous paths. I have competed and done very well as a Natural Figure competitor, but at the expense of my mental and physical health, due to the fluctuations of "on season" and "off season" weight changes. I would not give up those experiences for anything. However, my focus now is to be as healthy as possible. And who knows, as soon as I figure it all out...I may be back on stage!
What mistakes did you make when you first started working out?
I started to become interested at about 12, I think it is incredibly important not to focus on muscle building at this point, I think this is the time to learn proper form and technique, basic light weight, high rep workouts until you hit about 15-16. The biggest mistake I made was being the dreaded "Cardio Queen" I hate to admit it.
