When I Started:
Feb, 2007
How I Started:
I started years ago, when I weighed over 210 lbs. and couldn't bear to look at myself in the mirror. No one trained or helped me. I come from an extremely sedentary family, and I just had myself to rely on.
Why I Love It:
My interest has only grown since those first days working out, and more and more, I've felt that this is something that I'm meant to do. It just feels right to me.
The feeling of growing strength, discipline, and developing a better sense of my own identity all push me to achieve this goal.
I've used mostly machines while training, and now it's time for me to learn some free weight/dumbbell moves to really get some serious work done. Any tips are much appreciated.
How I Stay Motivated:
Henry Rollins. I never had anyone strong enough to hold as a mentor in my entire life...until now. For more information, read his essay, "Iron". An excerpt follows:
"There is no better way to fight weakness than with strength. Once the mind and body have been awakened to their true potential, it's impossible to turn back.
The Iron never lies to you. You can walk outside and listen to all kinds of talk, get told that you're a god or a total bastard. The Iron will always kick you the real deal. The Iron is the great reference point, the all-knowing perspective giver. Always there like a beacon in the pitch black. I have found the Iron to be my greatest friend. It never freaks out on me, never runs. Friends may come and go. But two hundred pounds is always two hundred pounds."

I want to permanently transform my body into that which it was meant to be.
Goal (Long):
Throughout my life, I've had an inner vision of the body I was meant to have.
As an overweight child, coming from a family with very poor lifestyle choices, I wasn't given the proper training and skills to develop a healthy body. Over the last several years, I managed to change my shape somewhat, from over 210 lbs. and virtually no muscle, to a loss of about 50 lbs. However, this was mainly accomplished through a consistently poor diet and chain-smoking. :/
Since then, I've been clean and sober for 2 and a half years, and have decided that it's time to get my body back on track. Though I don't have any illusions of grandeur in terms of competitive bodybuilding, I do want a toned, athletic physique. I've been quite good at maintaining whatever body weight I've achieved, so I know that once I've attained my goal, I'll do a good job maintaining it.
I recently joined a gym, and had several personal training sessions to determine my starting fitness level. I was astonished to learn that a healthy fat percentage for women was around 12%, and that mine was at an incredible 35%! I was floored, not to mention disgusted with myself.
I know that, with the right support and information, I can do this. Every bit of encouragement and advice will help.
Weight Goal:
I want to LOSE 45 lb
Bodyfat Goal:
18%

Thanks a lot, yes..it does take dedication being edge, much like training and excercise..for me though it goes hand in hand, taking care of your health and your body. I read your avatar, seems like you've come a long way. Being clean and sober for 2 1/2 years is a hell of an accomplishment..You should be proud. I read your quote on Rollins, he's always been a big influence on me. He has accomplished so much, and still throws up that iron! Stay dedicated! XXX
being honest most of my weight was lost by a nutrition change. Once I started eating right things just kind of dissappeared. I did a fair share of cardio and some lifting but not a huge amount. Now that I've hit a plateau I've sat down and replanned everything and am intending on making some great gains in the very near future.
