OldManSkinny

Overall Goal:  I'll be on a beach in Brazil for a couple of weeks in January, so the goal is to maintain/improve on my current physique through added protein, carb cycling, heavy lifting, and moderate HIIT cardio.

Fit Status:  I'm trying to hit that edge--enough food to feed the muscle growth, but not too much to push me into double-digit body fat.

Motivation Level: 9/10

When I Started:
Feb, 2001
How I Started:
Eight years ago I was only a couple of pounds away from 200 and was NOT going to let that much weight hang out in front of my thin, ectomorphic frame. I ran across Body-for-LIFE and started eating better and lifting in my basement. Within a couple of months I was feeling much better about myself, and after ten months I was down to 145 and 15% body fat. I haven't turned back. Since then I've missed very few workouts and continued to hone my physique, maintaining 8-9% body fat and adding muscle mass to my current 160 pounds.
Why I Love It:
Bodybuilding is such a universal sport—anyone can build their body. The gym isn't just for the big hulks. We old folks enjoy the added energy that we get from being fit. My lovely wife of 40 years has Alzheimer's disease, but she's a great workout partner, admiring my poses and pushing me to do that extra rep. I am convinced that her daily workouts are slowing the progress of her dementia and giving her a healthier and stronger body to enjoy for as long as she has left. Our 24 grandchildren know that we think a healthy lifestyle is important. That may serve as an example for them as they make their own choices about fitness. Bodybuilding has augmented my other interests and skills as well. I'm a horn player in the Orchestra at Temple Square, the orchestra that accompanies the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Maintaining my musical skills through regular practice and performance prepared me with the ability to stay dedicated to a workout and nutrition plan. I like cooking so it's been no problem tailor-making meals to fit nutritional needs. And I'm quite a religious fellow—my efforts to build my body parallel my efforts to grow spiritually.
How I Stay Motivated:
Bodybuilding has become such a part of me that I can't imagine NOT getting in a workout every day. But I do step on the scales regularly and check out the abs in the mirror every day just to make sure I'm staying on track.
BB Accomplishments:
Maintaining a clean diet and daily workouts for nearly 8 years is the major accomplishment. I'm proud of the gradual growth of muscle mass, and in my growing knowledge about health and fitness. I'm glad that I have opportunities to share what I know with anyone who visits www.realsolutionsmag.com/idealbb where I am a moderator. I'm honored to be #144 of BB.com's Over-40 Amateur-of-the-week Contest and to also be highlighted in the "Transformation of the Week--Over 40" section.

I was really proud of this picture. It was taken AFTER 12 weeks of hard work. I had lost 20 pounds doing Body-for-LIFE.
Not too bad for an old, skinny guy. This is at 158 pounds and about 6% body fat.

Description: Routine from ABA show, Oct. 2008. Poor lighting, not very smooth, but not bad for a first time on stage. ABA encourages props so that's the reason for the cane. I'll be a little more traditional and do better in 2009.

Okay, I'll have to admit, things are not going well.  For nearly a week I've been in double digit body fat.  I've had a workout every day since returning from CA.  Of course it's what I'm eating.  In the back of my mind I've been remembering past advice--"Skinny, you've got to eat more...

Hope you have a great time in Brasil. My daughter spent a year before college, and has been back several times since then. I am curious, about how many calories do you consume a day? I'm having a real hard time finding the right balance, and it all goes to my waist. I guess that's just part of getting old, but it is discourageing. Thanks, and have a great day.

Hey bud, yes I am still natural I have to be because of the military plus I do not believe in taking drugs. I am a criminal justice major and I like to uphold the law even though I am not in law enforcement. i really hope I can win something just to say I did what I could when I was bodybuilding. After April I will be leaving for Special Forces training in June so it is going to take my body to a whole new level. More of a runners body. You doing any competitions?

Thanks Mike for your comments. They are sincerely appreciated. She was the one invited to God's Kingdom. I wasn't. Her work here was finished. I still have work to do here serving Him and honoring her memory.

Thanks for your encouragement! This measure was done with one of those electronic devices that sends current through your body. I'm told that this method is a little more accurate than the calliper. Would you mind if I sent you a few questions about supplements? I find them a very difficult and confusing purchase.
