Eight years ago I was only a couple of pounds away from 200 and was NOT going to let that much weight hang out in front of my thin, ectomorphic frame. I ran across Body-for-LIFE and started eating better and lifting in my basement. Within a couple of months I was feeling much better about myself, and after ten months I was down to 145 and 15% body fat. I haven't turned back. Since then I've missed very few workouts and continued to hone my physique, maintaining 8-9% body fat and adding muscle mass to my current 160 pounds.
Why I Love It:
Bodybuilding is such a universal sport—anyone can build their body. The gym isn't just for the big hulks. We old folks enjoy the added energy that we get from being fit. My lovely wife of 40 years has Alzheimer's disease, but she's a great workout partner, admiring my poses and pushing me to do that extra rep. I am convinced that her daily workouts are slowing the progress of her dementia and giving her a healthier and stronger body to enjoy for as long as she has left. Our 24 grandchildren know that we think a healthy lifestyle is important. That may serve as an example for them as they make their own choices about fitness.
Bodybuilding has augmented my other interests and skills as well. I'm a horn player in the Orchestra at Temple Square, the orchestra that accompanies the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Maintaining my musical skills through regular practice and performance prepared me with the ability to stay dedicated to a workout and nutrition plan. I like cooking so it's been no problem tailor-making meals to fit nutritional needs. And I'm quite a religious fellow—my efforts to build my body parallel my efforts to grow spiritually.
How I Stay Motivated:
Bodybuilding has become such a part of me that I can't imagine NOT getting in a workout every day. But I do step on the scales regularly and check out the abs in the mirror every day just to make sure I'm staying on track.
BB Accomplishments:
Maintaining a clean diet and daily workouts for nearly 8 years is the major accomplishment. I'm proud of the gradual growth of muscle mass, and in my growing knowledge about health and fitness. I'm glad that I have opportunities to share what I know with anyone who visits www.realsolutionsmag.com/idealbb where I am a moderator. I'm honored to be #144 of BB.com's Over-40 Amateur-of-the-week Contest and to also be highlighted in the "Transformation of the Week--Over 40" section.

Description: Routine from ABA show, Oct. 2008. Poor lighting, not very smooth, but not bad for a first time on stage. ABA encourages props so that's the reason for the cane. I'll be a little more traditional and do better in 2009.
I'm on my way home--a day-long bus ride from Denver to Salt Lake City. The tour has been successful--we've played for over 50,000 people in 10 days. Last night's concert in the famous Red Rocks Amphitheater west of Denver was standing-room-only for nearly 10,000 people and it was video...
Mike, how's it going? I'm sure by now you've gotten back into the grove after the comp. I'm hitting it hard, prepping for Oct. IronMan. Let me know how things are coming. You Da Man....
I'm an introvert as well, so I really should have the time. He needs to be my number 1 priority but sadly I can't say that right now. I guess admitting it is the first step to walking with God more.
Well it seems the only time I make for God is in the evening before bed and even then I feel like I should be sleeping to get my solid 8-9 hours in. There's so many things to do during the day that finding time for God is hard. Even as I type this I know that's not nearly a good enough excuse.
Thanks for the great comment. I will always remember that you are the one who reinforced for me that I would enjoy being ripped. Once I got through my thick head that I would never excel if I didn't get serious about the diet, I was halfway there. Now I can focus on adding size, but knowing how I need to look. Thanks again for all your support and encouragement.
Thank you, yeah I am trying to keep with it. I definitely never want to go back to the "old" me...lol. Honestly, the calves are a genetic gift from my father, they have always been pretty big so I can't take full credit for them...lol
Hmmm...Ultra Masters? I did not know there was such a thing and I'm pleased there is. Something to look forward to. What will they call the 70+ group?
I did just start to record my bodyfat. I've never been able to gain much weight and I realize finally that that is more of a blessing than a curse.
