When I Started:
Mar, 2009
How I Started:
I've worked out for about 5 years now, primarily since I started university. The problem is that when I was younger (as I think is the case with most guys) I could eat what I want and remain thin. At the same time I also did a lot of sport - athletics training (sprints and jumps), running for enjoyment, cricket practice and training etc and hence I found it easy to stay in relatively good shape. However, as my university studies have progressed my appetite has got bigger but the time I have available to workout has got less: I have lived by the clearly faulty motto that I workout so that I can eat whatever I like. Well, I 've had to face the facts that this clearly is not true: my waist has hit 36 inches and I am not happy with this. I know that I can no longer go on paying no attention to what I put in my mouth yet expecting to see positive changes in my body hence although I have worked out for a few years it is only now that I have truly grasped that good abs are made in the kitchen that I consider myself to work out/bodybuild.
Why I Love It:
There are a number of reasons why I love to workout but to list a few that immediately come to mind and in no particular order: I love the endorphin high that I get following a workout; that sense of well being and the extra energy you seem to have for whatever you're doing for the next few hours. I also love the effect that it has on my body: I like the idea that I'm sculpting a my body.
How I Stay Motivated:
I go onto youtube and bodyspace and see the progres that other people have made: the chancges that some people have made are truly inspiring.
This photo represents how I looked when I started 3 weeks ago - I have far too much bodyfat and it is my aim to get my bodyfat down really low so that I can see my abs whilst putting on a little muscle in the process.
Lose fat and gain muscle and most importantly see those abs
Goal (Long):
Firstly, I want to lose bodyfat and tone up in the process. Secondly, I want to achieve good enough muscle definition to be able to see my abs and also to get my waist down to 32". Once I have achieved this level of bodyfat I will reassess and most likely aim to pack on some muscle in the areas that are lacking. The reason that I am getting down to a lower bodyfat first is because for me definition is far more important than size.
Whilst losing the bodyfat my first aim in terms of toning is to get my bench up to 100kg (220lbs) for 10 reps. I have previously benched 110kg (240lbs).
What do you do before your workout to get motivated and energized?
I make sure that I take a protein shake (soon I will be eating the carbs that I'm meant to eat in the evening before my workout as well). I also think of how much better I look than when I started as well as remembering some of the inspirational chanhges that I have seen people make on bodybulding.com Between reps and sets I also like to listen to rap to keep me in an aggressive mindset. When motivation is really low i may resort to the Rocky theme tune!)I make sure that I take a protein shake (soon I will be eating the carbs that I'm meant to eat in the evening before my workout as well). Other than the obvious benefits (appearance, health, etc.), how has bodybuilding and fitness improved your overall life?
After only 3 weeks of healthy eating and working out I am feeling a lot better about myself. It's nice to realise that you have control over things which previously you thought you didn't e.g. I always though that I would never be able to acheive that V-taper, of course I haven't yet done it but at least I am seeing the smallest changes in the correct direction. After only 3 weeks of healthy eating and working out I am feeling a lot better about myself. Do you have a significant other?
Yes
How has bodybuilding and fitness helped or hurt your relationship?
She likes to workout as well but at the moment she sees my rigid adherence to my diet as a really bad thing. In fact it has resulted in a few arguments but I'm not going to budge on this one after all she's the one that tells me how good guys like Will Smith, Vin Diesel and Brad Pitt look withou their shirts on!...I'm sure that they ate clean and virtually lived in the gym to prepare for those scenes where they're exposed. Ultimately I'm sure she'll be happy when she sees the improvements that I make in my body. She likes to workout as well but at the moment she sees my rigid adherence to my diet as a really bad thing.
