What got me started and has motivated me over the years to stay fit and healthy has varied about as much as my life has. I believe that is the key to why it has worked consistently for me for about 34 years.

What mistakes did you make when you first started working out?
Jerky motions, not having my feet firmly planted, lifting from the ground without bending my knees, and it goes on and on.

What is the one tip you would give somebody who is just getting started?
Avoid the gimmicks! Go with tried and true routines and exercises that have been around for years and have proven results. Be patient, it's not a sprint, it truly is a marathon. Don't cave into the drugs and crazy supplements! Eat right, work hard and consistently, and don't give up! It is so worth it! But do it for your own health and fitness above all. Not just for some short-term goal or competition. Compete with yourself, and keep your eyes on you! Make you the best you that you can be and you cannot fail. Oh, and protect that back! I have sat on a railway sketching, which had just become disused (but I didn't know that), which is near a main road. The 40 tonne trucks going by on the road nearby , combined with an echo in the cutting, had me jumping up on several occasions, as they sounded almost exactly like a train approaching....
