When I Started:
Sep, 2008
How I Started:
Actually, it's been 12 years since I last stepped into a gym. In 1996, I joined a ladies only gym and started working out 5 days a week, religiously, in spite of having two small children and an abusive husband who didn't want me to succeed. In a very short time, I could see and feel amazing results that no one could take away from me, and that only I could claim credit for. It empowered me to stand up for myself and make changes that had been a long time coming. I ended my marriage and moved on to a much healthier life. I also took on a major financial disadvantage, being a single mother with no college education. I worked 2/3 jobs to make ends meet, and my success in the gym soon faded to a wistful memory. Now, my kids are grown, and while I still work 2 jobs, I am determined to take the little bit of extra time that I have and make small changes that will someday soon become big changes. Look out world....Here I Come!
Why I Love It:
Working out is empowering....it is a unique lifestyle that gives back as much as it takes to stay committed to it. If I stick to it, there are measurable returns that are undeniable, and no one can claim credit for the successes or failures except for me.
How I Stay Motivated:
I try to remember the health reasons I have for wanting to get fit. It also helps to see that cute little sundress hanging up in my bedroom...going to waste because I can't wear it anymore.
My goal has nothing to do with being thin...I like having curves. But at the age of 37, curves can be dangerous without brakes...and the older I get, the harder it gets to lose extra pounds.
I want to reach my ideal weight of 140 pounds and maintain a healthy lifestyle, by making long term changes in how I eat, what I eat, where I eat and what I put my precious time and energy into.
I want to avoid the things that killed my father at the young age of 62...Diabetes, Heart Disease, & High Blood Pressure. I've already been diagnosed with HBP and have been on medication for it since I was 33. I want to be able to give up the medication because I've beaten it with diet and and active lifestyle.
I want to take my natural abilities to encourage other people, make them feel good about themselves and have a positive effect on their lives just by being myself. Right now, I do that from behind a bar....I want to switch that over into the fitness world and become a personal trainer...giving myself the gift of a lifetime of being physically fit, getting paid for doing something I love and helping other people feel great about themselves.

What are your secrets for making healthy food taste great?
Seasoning!! NOT SALT!! Put the shaker away and grab the spice rack. It's amazing how good something can be without all the added salt, once you relearn to eat at HOME.

Where do you find healthy recipes to try?
I don't have much time for cooking, so right now my focus is on quick, healthy meals that require little to no preparation. Breakfast is either a whole grain english muffin with butter spray and cheese or whole grain melba toast and string cheese in the car on my way to work.
