How I Started:
My younger brother was in football, and when I'd visit from college, we go to the weight room and lift. I always wanted to be a superhero--and let's just say I had the bumbling, nerdy secret identity part down pat! After I got my second real teaching job, I got a membership to a gym. That was about 1996, but it took a few years to realize that just working out doesn't cut it. I saw my first competition in 1999, and decided that I was going to punch it up and compete. I've been competing since 2000 and I've been steadily gaining an average of three pounds a year. I'd like to see that average grow--the right way!
Why I Love It:
I sucked at sports. Royally. I didn't catch my first fly ball in baseball until my freshman year of college, and then I was so excited and jumping up and down, I failed to throw the ball and get the double. Oh well. Sports weren't my thing....but I wanted a trophy! Thank the Lord I found bodybuilding. I like to push my self, but I don't worry about letting "the team" down. And, ironically, I'm always training with someone--so maybe it is a team sport. By the way...my athleticism has improved.
How I Stay Motivated:
Competitions! I don't know why anyone would put themselves through grueling workouts and diets and not compete. Competing keeps me going, and not ever wanting to be the littlest guy in class (especially since I teach 6th graders).

I would like to compete as a strong, big, lean middleweight before 40.
Goal (Long):
I was 4'9" and 89 lbs. in 8th grade. Maybe I was 5'9" and 120 when I started college. I was only 130 when I started teaching. I've never had a problem with weight. I can eat almost anything and not gain excess fat. I even tried to make my waist bigger just so pants would fit me. So, gaining muscle, and thereby weight, has been continually on my list of goals. I'd like to keep get up to and keep 175-185. When I'm not competing, I'm usually about 160-65. This is an attainable goal.
I always wanted 16" arms...and when really pumped, I can get them...so now, I want 18. A little tougher goal.
And, my legs. They were definitely chicken legs before. I surpassed turkey legs a couple of years ago, and I'd like to think I've got ostrich legs now. Still room for improvement.

At the Southern Indiana NPC competition, I placed third. Check the photo. I think I could've gotten second, and I figure my downfall is not my size, but my posing. I needed to be working on that, but there were other activities getting in the way. (The week before the competition, I had...
