When I Started:
Apr, 2009
How I Started:
I was actually one of the early female professional firefighters, and weightlifting was a part of my basic and ongoing training. That was way back in 1979.
Why I Love It:
I have always enjoyed it. Aside from the fact that it makes me look great and feel better, I find that working out is very "grounding" for me - almost like meditation.
How I Stay Motivated:
By charting my progress. By constantly educating myself about fitness and nutrition. And by learning enough to understand that when I hit roadblocks because of being hypothyroid, those roadblocks can be overcome, even if it takes longer than I would like.
BB Accomplishments:
Nothing that is pure 'bodybuilding' (yet). But I did drop 20 pounds in 2007 and another 10 pounds in 2008 (would probably have dropped more, but illness and injuries interfered).
Weigh 135 - 145 pounds, tone and define my muscles.
Goal (Long):
Simply put, I want to look and feel my best. It is time to get back to the body I want. I want to weigh 130 - 150 pounds (depending on musculature); have a body fat percentage between 15% - 25%. This will be as good for my health as it will be for my ego. Additionally, I am involved in a couple of unusual "sports" - I fight with rapiers (swords) in the Society for Creative Anachronism and I am also getting into the armored combat (think: knights in shining armor). This requires a *lot* of strength and stamina! I want to reach this goal as soon as possible, and know that I will hit pitfalls along the way because I have hypothyroidism which makes me more prone to illnesses (and weight gain) than many people. But I have been able to be active, despite my health issues and I want to improve on it!
How has bodybuilding and fitness helped and/or changed your family life?
It hasn't, because I am now a single woman living alone. But many years ago, when I had just quit working as a fireman, my second husband made me *quit* lifting weights and running! Are you a parent?
Yes
How has bodybuilding and fitness helped you to be a better parent?
It has helped to inspire my two grown children. They know that I am in better shape than many women who are my age.

How has bodybuilding and fitness helped you in your career?
Well, it's been an interesting summer. An elbow injury has sidelined a lot of my workouts, but paying close attention to diet and working out other areas has paid off - I am now 8 pounds away from my first goal and have lost 20 pounds this year. I think I will be able to get more lifting...
