How I Started:
My brother (Dwayne Butler) was a competitive bodybuilder and power lifter so I used to check out his shows and magazines as a child. I also used to watch Corey Everson’s Bodyshaping and Kiana Tom’s Flex Appeal back in the day, but usually with the remote in one hand and a bowl of Doritos in the other! I was really only interested in watching the ladies but occasionally I would try a few exercises when I actually felt inspired to get off the couch. It wasn’t until an 8th grade gym class when we were forced to workout that I realized that I was pretty good at it. Then came high school football and track where I continued to lift during those seasons but I soon reverted back to my lazy ways towards the end of high school when I focused more on making money than making muscles. I’d just do the occasional “date workout” to pump up my arms and flatten my stomach. That trend continued until I finally decided to stop wasting my free gym access at Rutgers University and I’ve been hooked ever since!
Why I Love It:
Working out is now such a part of my routine that there’s a tremendous guilt when I don’t go. I feel like a sinner at the confessional booth when I miss a gym day. I enjoy pushing myself to new levels and seeing the results of my efforts. I also enjoy the camaraderie and atmosphere inside of the gym. It’s a joy to inspire and help others reach their fitness goals each day.
How I Stay Motivated:
As a personal trainer and media personality, staying in shape is a major part of my career. I’m working on developing a fitness show and seeking high profile fitness modeling opportunities so I have to stay in shape all year. Many of my clothes would also look funny if I had no muscle to fill them out so if I want access to over half of my closet, I’d better hit the weights!
BB Accomplishments:
While I may train like a Bodybuilder and am heavily involved in the industry, I’m not interested in competing at this time. However I am the fitness specialist for the Lifestyles/Health section of Allhiphop.com and the founder of Industrial Strength and Performance (www.isperformance.com ). On the other side of the health spectrum, I’m also the creator of The Fat Darrell, the nation’s best sandwich according to MAXIM Magazine (www.fatdarrell.com). Before you check out more info on that sandwich, I’ll warn you already that it’s definitely fattening – I created that before I became a personal trainer so you’ll definitely need to do some extra cardio if you decide to pound one of those down on your cheat day! Anyway, as a result of The Fat Darrell’s success, I’ve been featured on Good Morning America, in Esquire Magazine and on Elvis Duran and the Z-Morning Zoo radio show among various other print, radio and television interviews. The video clip below is from a recent Food Network appearance with Paula Deen. Since I’ve been featured on so many Food Network programs already, I’m working on possibly bringing a cooking/variety show of my own to the airwaves soon so stay tuned!
