I always admired bodybuilders, powerlifters and weightlifters, even more so once I realized the will and training required to even contend for a regional title in any of the disciplines. The characteristic will, physical strength and (for the first two) physiques seemed to scream "superhuman." Alas, I seemed the eternal ectomorph, with a skinny body with great natural cardio, endurance and some speed. I ran track and cross country in high school. Although my body seem to respond a bit when I stuck to a weight program for a while, it wasn't until I got 30 and my metabolism slowed from Flash fast (people have always been shocked by what I can consume) to just Jesse Owens fast that I said, "OK, let's get serious about putting on size while keeping our cardio health good." Over the next 5-6 years, I stayed with a program, grew everything in my upper body so much so that my wife said, "I didn't want to say anything to you because I didn't want you to get a big head" and picked up strength everywhere (my legs refuse to grow). But I fell off the workout wagon, especially after fatherhood. I don't look bad for my age, but want to feel and look better.
Why I Love It:
Feel stronger, more energetic. And, yeah, I may not have always liked my looks, but I am a little vain.
How I Stay Motivated:
I look at the health problems those who didn't work out regularly have as they age. And I look at my father, still in great shape into his 70s, and my mother, not in such great shape in her mid-60s. Guess which one, once they hit their mid-30s, made sure exercise stayed a part of his life and which just talked about it for the next 30 years?
