I started around 1989 (high school). Just sort of happened. I was about 140 pounds starting college. So I wanted to put a little bit of weight on and wanted to gain some muscle. I started working out and never totally quit. I took extended breaks of a couple months or so from time to time, but always got back in the gym.
Why I Love It:
I don't love working out. I hate it. I get mad at the weights. I talk to them. I hate them but they aren't going to defeat me. You get the picture.
How I Stay Motivated:
I eat a lot so I need to work out to keep myself in check. If I take a break from working out too long then I start putting on fat. I don't like fat, so that motivates me.
BB Accomplishments:
Finally benching 315 for two reps when I turned 35. I had previously never benched 315 before. Not high school, not college, not club med...no time had I ever benched 315. I got it after doing a strange workout regimen a buddy recommended me try for 6 weeks.
You take a weight you know you CANNOT bench 10 times in a row, but can "handle".
You take that weight and bench it once. Pause 30 seconds. Do it again. Repeat that 10 times....
Next week, cut the seconds down to 20 between reps. Do 10 reps.
Next week, 10 seconds between reps. Do 10 reps.
On the 4th week, increase the weight and start back at 30 seconds between individual reps again. Back it to 20 seconds between reps the next week and then 10 seconds between reps the next week.
I gained more strength with this regimen than any time before previous in my workout lifetime.

What is the one tip you would give somebody who is just getting started?
Get your joints used to the weight. Then up the weight on a regular basis. It sounds selfish but only think of yourself in the gym to maximize your gains and to reward yourself for the hard work your are putting in.Get your joints used to the weight. Trying to impress people and using bad form to do it.
