You can either go to school for a few years, or get certified in a few months. I have studied training in my spare time forever. I do it on the side now, because its exhausting and isn't the best pay, to be honest.
Gyms will test your bodyfat for you in a few different ways. The best method at gyms is the caliper method where they pinch fat in various spots on your body and calculate a % based on how much is pinched. Another method is a bodyfat scale, which you can also buy). The scale I've found to be less accurate. But, most importantly, don't focus on the exact # that you get, just use the same testing method repeatedly every month or 2 and track how you're doing as far as decreasing your #.
