Background

When I Started: Apr 1976
HOW I STARTED:

I used to go to the YMCA when I was 15 and spend the whole day there playing basketball, doing boxing training, swimming and tooling around with the weights; so from 15 on I lifted on and off. When I hit 30 I got really out of shape from eating poorly, drinking too much beer and working late nights and weekends all the time. From age 30 to 43 I yo-yo'ed between being in really good (not great) shape (for a corporate/ad guy type) to being in so-so shape. From age 43-47 I let myself slide completely and felt old and tired. I pulled myself up by the bootstraps at 47 and starting working out very seriously and with 100 percent intensity from there until today (2 years and change). I look and feel better then I did when I was 25. I have totally exceeded my wildest expectations physically. I look at my photos and think "Is that guy really me?". I recently got my personal trainer certification and am avidly (and rabidly) pursuing a career in the fitness industry (all facets). "It's never too late to be great" That's my motto.

WHY I LOVE IT:

You can work really hard at a job, give it your all, and the boss's nephew can get the promotion over you, you can give your heart and soul in a relationship and you can get jilted for someone else; with bodybuilding--and fitness as a whole, you will reap what you sow. The harder and smarter you train and eat, the better your results will be. You are totally the master of your destiny. My motto (I'm certainly slinging a lot of mottoes around today, aren't I?) with fitness and bodybuilding is: "No excuses offered. None accepted." How you look and feel is totally up to you and nobody, but nobody, can take that away from you but you.

My Motivation Program

Without any false modesty, I want to be a force to be reckoned with as a 50 and over fitness personality/motivator/teacher (will be 50 in 2 months). The only way I am going to get there is to wake up focused on my goal, pursue that goal all day, and go to sleep at night thinking of that goal: basically, the way I focused on getting laid as a teenager, but hopefully with better results--anything would be better results than I had in that department, but I digress. My BB.Com signature is (Oy vay, enough with the fakakta mottoes already) "failure is not an option" and it ain't. That's that. Good night, Au revoir, over and out...Shalom...Adios..(Okay, Herm, we get it.)

Wow! Sure hope I look like that when I'm 48. Oh, wait a minute - I'm 56 - too late. Oh well, very inspiring anyway. And the blogs are the best entertainment on the site.

I don't know what awes me more - his unbelievable body that would be the envy of any 30 year old, or his delightfully twisted personality. I finally know what I want to be if and when I grow up!

Yes. I used the word wonderful. It is. I take it back. I'm not sorry. . [View Video]

She hung up on me.

(I just got a call to participate in a survey and instead of hanging up as violently as I could I thought I would practice a little improv/comedy, so I jotted this down ASAP before I forget what just went down.) Her: Is this Steven Herman? Me: Yes, very much so. Her: We are conducting a survey would you like to participate. Me: Yes. I'm sorry. Her: Don't worry we aren't going to try to sell you anything. Me: But I always worry. It is just who I am. I worry myself sick all day every day. I'm very worried right now. Her: We'd like to fix some problems with this city and state. Me: Yes. Problems....

guest Hey Herm. I have three questions for you: 1. Is breakfast really that important, even if you aren't hungry? 2. When is the cooking show coming? 3. If Romney wins the nomination, will you vote for him (or vote at all)? Mar 29, 2012 9:32pm
Oblander
Oblander hey big man, i was wondering what sort of training split you follow? I've talked to some older lifters, and most of them say they reduce their workload, or at least frequency of training, as they age...what do you think about that? Mar 29, 2012 5:56pm
