When I Started:
Oct, 2007
How I Started:
I ferociously peruse all things physiology, endocrinology and nutritional and I finally thought that it may be useful if I actually applied it to myself for a change.
Why I Love It:
I love trying to improve myself and am constantly trying to set the bar a little bit higher! I also LOVE the rush of adrenaline I get from lifting heavy!
How I Stay Motivated:
Well, truthfully I see cancer patients every day that have very little time left on this planet and it reminds me how important it is to be healthy and to live life with profound appreciation for every experience you are fortunate enough to encounter.

Goal (Long):
Honestly, I just want to be in the best shape of my life, ever. I feel like, generally, that if you're not improving you're regressing. Right or wrong, that philosophy keeps me motivated to constantly improve myself.
My plan currently is to do 7-10 day "bulk and cut" cycles through the first week of March.
Weight Goal:
I want to LOSE 10 lb
Bodyfat Goal:
8%

Do you sometimes use energy enhancing supplements?
Yes
Which supplements do you take? When do you take them?
I will use an arginine based supplement that I've tweaked preworkout to give me energy. Arginine and nitric oxide pumps are irrelevant to hypertrophy.

How many reps per set do you usually do? Why?
I ALWAYS use progressive overload!
I've experimented with total body workouts that loaded the muscles 3-4 times every 8-10 days (HST, etc.) I’m certain that it beats a once every 5-7 days split. I tend to hit each body part every 48-72 hours and spread the volume out over the week.
My set and rep scheme depends on what stage I'm in. For hyperetrophy I tend to use loads with 6-8 reps to near failure for a total of 4-5 sets. Since I hit each body part 3 times over 6-7 days this breaks the volume up over the week and maintains protein synthesis over the week. I know many people have gotten much bigger than me loading a muscle with 12 or more sets once every 5-7 days but a majority of the research indicates that this may not be optimal for hypertrophy.
I will do very high rep/short rest sets for depletion on cut weeks but will always use a couple of sets of heavy loads to maintain muscle mass. Research and anecdotal evidence shows that volume can be cut back significantly so long as intensity (weight and speed of concentric and eccentric lifts, NOT perceived intensity)is maintained. It's foolish to switch to high rep training to cut up without specific dietary accompaniment to deplete glycogen AND heavy loads to maintain muscle mass. I learned this the hard way in college, haha.I ALWAYS use progressive overload!

I've received several pm's from concerned bodyspacer's who have told me my several pound weight loss over the last 4 days means that i am losing lean tissue (muscle) and that i need to bump my calories up.
While i sincerely appreciate the advice and concern, the reason i am losing so much...
I'm partial to HST-style with a few *considerable* modifications but honestly, starting out as a rank beginner I should grow on about ANY training program (even HIT, well maybe not!). After 8 weeks or so I'm going to completely readjust my program based upon my physique goals and progress. This...

Are you an MD that you change your meds on your own? Just wondering....as you know that's my job so I have to be concerned, especially with those sick guns to worry about. ;)
yes I like hitting a muscle 2 or 3 times a week too. But have had some problems with my ellbows. think the workload was too high. but if you take care about that it should be okay. you have to take more care when doing such a high frequenzy. but i feel that it is working better than a body part split !
