After doing caloric restriction (CR) for four years (for possible life extension), I could not exercise as much as I wanted. In fact, I experienced increasing tendonitis from the little exercise I was able to do, which then forced me to exercise even less. Hunger wasn't an issue, in fact I was less hungry while doing CR. But CR was like a physical straightjacket that kept getting tighter. So in a real sense, where 'life' is understood as living right now, caloric restriction is like life restriction. So then one day whilst suffering aches and pains of tendonitis here and there I imagined my scrawny, weak, and half-starved body encased in a surrounding muscular superstructure. There and then I resolved that that vision would be realized. Look at my before & after photos... it is coming true!
Why I Love It:
I love all phases of bodybuilding. I feel great once I'm into a workout. And when I've gone beyond pain during maximal exertion with single-minded focus on a muscle system I'm working, I find myself in a meditative and almost exaltative state. Then I feel great afterwards -- calm, alert, alive, and satisfied. And I love the warm feeling of growth the next day and seeing results. Taking an active role in shaping one's form is a noble endeavor indeed!

There I am in August 2005 weighing 140 pounds.
Kept my weight at 140 lbs for 3 years doing calorie restriction for possible future life extension. But the physical deterioration became unacceptable and contrary to living life now.
An important goal is to strengthen my rotator-cuff muscles. MRI shows I have tendonosis in the supraspinatus (a rotar-cuff muscle) of both the right and left side. A result of this is that I can't do overhead presses, which are so important for anterior and medial deltoids developement. However, bench presses with the elbows held in close to the trunk are effective for the anterior deltoids, and lateral raises are pretty good for the medial deltoids. But I miss military presses for they're an exercise where intense effort lets you squeeze out another rep even when you thought you couldn't do it, and I love to get to that place of powerhouse intensity! In my view, it's pushing yourself beyond your limits that leads to muscle gains.

The good news for my body goals and stats is losing 20 pounds, mostly fat. The bad news is too much of it was muscle. The main reason for a global downward trend in all my body stats (including strength) this year was an appendicitis and appendectomy I had in January. Due to eating...
Yes I have tried accupuncture and just about everything else known to mankind all to no avail BUT the weightlifting still brings me pereiods of relief and for that I am thankful. I appreciate your thoughts and look forward to watching you progress.
Congratulations on making the decision to get fit. Believe in yourself and combine a good nutrition plan with aerobics and weight lifting and you will be amazed at the changes and the speed at which they can occur.
Stay strong and all the best.
