With growing aches and pains as I hit age 40, I decided to build up my body. One day when my back was killing me, I envisioned the transformation that needed to take place. I imagined my weak and bony body encased in a surrounding muscular superstructure. Look at my before & after photos ... that vision is coming to life!
Why I Love It:
I love all phases of bodybuilding. I feel great once I'm into a workout. When I reach a state during maximal exertion that's beyond pain with single-minded focus on a muscle system I'm working, I find myself in a meditative and almost exaltative state. Then I feel great afterwards -- calm, alert, and satisfied. And I love the feeling of growth the next day and seeing results. Taking an active role in shaping one's form seems a noble endeavor indeed!
How I Stay Motivated:
The mental image of my goal body.

There I am in August 2005 weighing 140 pounds.
Kept my weight at 140 lbs for 3 years doing calorie restriction for possible future life extension. But the physical deterioration became unacceptable and contrary to living life now.
Goal: adding about 15 pounds of well balanced muscle and cutting about 10 lbs of fat.
Goal (Long):
An important goal is to strengthen my rotator-cuff muscles. MRI shows I have mild tendonosis in the L supraspinatus (a rotar-cuff muscle), and I know it's also on the right side. This can become an area of serious problems with aging, so getting this area into optimal fitness is an important goal. And I've made major progress to date. The level of pain has dropped dramatically, even while lifting heavy. Important aspects of the recovery are a percussion device used by at my chiropractor's office that works wonders! Topical vitamin E has helped, however I get the reaction of severe acne when I use the oil on my shoulder, so I can't use it much. The at-home use of an infrared device for tendinitis has helped along with doing lateral raises instead of overhead military presses. And I just started (12/22/07) exercises for strengthening rotator-cuff muscles.
It is almost universally recognized that homeowners have an obligation, if not to themselves, to their community to keep their property looking attractive. The visual aesthetics of well-kept lawns, gardens, and homes makes living in a neighborhood pleasant and maintains local property values....
Yes I have tried accupuncture and just about everything else known to mankind all to no avail BUT the weightlifting still brings me pereiods of relief and for that I am thankful. I appreciate your thoughts and look forward to watching you progress.
Congratulations on making the decision to get fit. Believe in yourself and combine a good nutrition plan with aerobics and weight lifting and you will be amazed at the changes and the speed at which they can occur.
Stay strong and all the best.
