I got started in about 8th or 9th grade with a written bodybuilding course I purchased through the mail from California. Real cheesy by today's standards but I did it religiously and I had to improvise because I did not have a weight bench. My parents saw my pleasure with this crazy thing and purchased a cheap flat bench from Sears and I was off and running. I worked out in our attic (unfinished) in the fall through winter months and in our detached garage spring and summer. I had to improvise to follow all the proposed exercises to hit all the bodyparts. That lead me into high school and a membership to the local YMCA. That is when I really was hooked. By my senior year in high school I stopped playing some sports so I could train longer without having to stop and deal with team sports. That lead to a transferred membership to the YMCA at College in Wilmington, NC. Worked out for 4 years while riding a bicycle everywhere I had to go. Lived off campus 7 miles from College and road in every day, then to the "Y" another 5 miles and back to the beach another 10 miles. After graduating from college I went directly into the Health Club industry and continued training.
Why I Love It:
My love for working out can be summed up by a quote from George Allen, head coach for the Washington Redskins when he said "Working out is the mark of a champion". To make the time to get in your workouts and go through those workouts shows that you are a winner. I especially love the feeling that Arnold confirmed in his book and also in his film "Pumping Iron". The feeling you get out of a pumping workout is like having sex, but better! I personally like "the pump". moving weights, plates around, performing exercises with heavy weight knowing no one in the gym does what I do in that exercise. I love the rock hardness of muscle, meaning mature muscle, in that when you don't train for a few to several months, you just don't atrophy away. Yes you lose some muscle but not alot and when you do get back into it again, you bounce back quicker. Right now at 45, I really like that I am able to do the same exercises with now more weight than when I was in my prime around 28. I look forward to finally getting serious about this and packing on muscle to compare to a national level amateur. Who knows, maybe I'll do one show in my lifetime, of course Masters Division.
How I Stay Motivated:
That has been my downfall through the years. I'm 45 now. What do I have to train for? I've never competed, but follow it closely. That is the million dollar question. What I do, is several things. If I had a layoff, I purchase a FLEX mag and read it cover to cover and I mean all the fine print by all the supplement advertisers. I then set a goal date coinciding with some Pro competition like Oct Olympia and act like I'm competing. Another thing I do is to purchase a bunch of performance enhancement supplements and stack my kitchen countertop to where I have to train because I'm ingesting all this stuff. Once I'm back training, the muscle soreness (talking back to me) keeps me focused. I've tried NO products with success for mental focus along with the super pumps, but now all I do is listen to 3 AC/DC songs back to back cranked in my car and by the end of the third one I'm in the parking lot of the gym and I come out ready to kick ass. Don't even think of trying to engage me in a conversation while I'm warming up for battle. Needless to say I don't have much luck with the females. They would rather run away then to talk to me. Sorry ladies! Then it's seeing the success, the arms swelling to python size. The leg growth, delts getting capped, traps popping out, chest getting rounder and filling in in the upper area. I need thee answer as I train half the time. Three months on, 5 months off. 5 months on, 4 months off. That has been the story for about the past 10 years. Now, today I am going to lick this problem and train for Oct 07 Olympia as a non contestant and just compare my pics and stats of the pros. I saw the lineup stats b4 the past Olympia and I fall right into those height/weight numbers. My goal this 07 season is to get hooked up with a bodybuilder babe and never look back!
This is to all you Girlie losers from overseas who keep trying to **** my email address inbox up - Quit being pussies! Get a life, be normal! Start ****ing your mates and not my Inbox. Dickheads!
Here's the deal for this 45 yr old who works 60-75 hrs / week.
I work out three times per week, working bodyparts one time per week. Abs, lumbar, and calves twice a week. The once a week training frequency is because I believe with years of training behind me, if I train with high intensity,...
Your recent pictures look very solid. Your persistence will pay off, it is better to be on again and off again than not to work out at all, keep at it.
