It all began when I was a teenager. Due to a pronounced scoliosis, I had to choose between an operation and two years in a medical corset, immobilized from chin to mid-thigh.
I chose the corset.
Two years later, it was over, but I had little muscle left and my back was still a mess. The doctor said I'd never do sports again and sent me to a physical therapist. This one was half an hour late; I left. On my way back home, I saw a gym; I got in. I tried the machines, notably those to muscle up the back. I came back the day after to register.
Why I Love It:
I love to feel my body, in general, and I love martial arts, for many reasons.
How I Stay Motivated:
When I was still competing as a martial artist, staying motivated was easy: nobody likes to lose, above all if it means ending the day at the hospital! Which did happen to me a couple of times. So you train hard, you make each minute count, because in the ring or on the mat, each fraction of a second can make a difference.
BB Accomplishments:
When I informed myself and changed my diet, in December 2003, I gained 9 lbs of muscle (no fat, no water) in three weeks. I could see myself grow by the day. In half a year, I went from 182 to 207 lbs. My best weight was 199 lbs / 3.5% BF, but with my bodyfat that low I had to eat continuously, otherwise I quickly grew dizzy.
I've long avoided posting pictures of my younger self: not only is the quality really bad (try to remember the digital cameras of 10+ years ago) but the skinniness and ... the attitude ... are quite embarrassing. Still, if I took this picture in the first place, it's because I was proud of my comeba ...
According to the body composition machine I tried today at the gym (the kind that has an electric current travel through your hands, ankles, and soles), I have 18.2% body fat and am 7.7 kg (17 lb) overweight.
I'm crushed.
I don't know, 18.2% bodyfat (yikes!!) you should really think about working out and maybe trying a healthy diet. hahaha. Anyways, they used me as an example for the Navy to tape (just like we tape others to make sure they are in bodyfat standards) and it said I was 13% bodyfat, but I had vascular abs hahaha. Everybody there kinda lost respect for that system of measurement that day.
just saw your update progess pic. there has to be some kind of messed up bf% metric if you're @ 18.2. by looking at you, your bf would easily be single digit. you should get a second opinion for sure. mine must be half my bodyweight if that's where your at--LOL. i was just going to comment on how shredded you look. keep hanging tough brother.
Echoing Captain Ahab, many thanks for adding me as an inspiration! That means a lot coming from a guy like you, who I also find vey inspirational and motivating. The best is yet to come!
Thank you very much for saying that you find me inspirational. I am both deeply humbled as well as truly honored to receive such praise. Rest assured that I will continue to work as hard as I can to prove that fitness has no age limit. Stay strong, focused & determined and may God bless.
yes..very wise words, true self control is what i'm looking for. aikido along with tai chi and wushu should set me on the correct course..thank you for ur time and words and a very happy new year to you!!
