Background

When I Started: Jan 2002
HOW I STARTED:

I was fortunate to have an athletic upbringing. My dad and I were always playing sports, even before I started school. In high-school I played almost every sport available: baseball, football, basketball, track & field, cross-country running. After high-school I stopped playing sports and got into bodybuilding. Even though I started late, I remember always appreciating aesthetic physiques. I'm sure comic books and action movies contributed to this.

WHY I LOVE IT:

Bodybuilding is a struggle. The aspects I love about it are the same aspects I find difficult and sometimes hate. The work is endless, and this can be incredibly satisfying, but also exhausting -- both physically and mentally. Learning new training and dieting methods is an on-going process, but this can also be confusing. Dieting gets me into the best shape of my life, but I have to suffer to get there each time. The suffering never goes away. It never gets easier. And yet, for some strange reason, this is why it's a wonderful pursuit. The pain is both good and bad, and it's really the combination of both that defines bodybuilding for me.

My Motivation Program

I'm not a competitor or fitness model -- so I don't find motivation by thinking about my next contest or the money I'll get from a photo-shoot. I stay motivated by setting my own small goals while keeping in mind a life-long goal of how I want to look. It's a constant struggle. Some weeks are good: I want to go to the gym and stay on track with my diet. Other weeks are tough: I don't want to train, and I just want to eat whatever I want. Sometimes I give in to those weeks; I'm human. But I try my best to stay on track. I also gain motivation by coming to this site and seeing the success and commitment of others. And I'm also inspired by those who have put me on their inspiration list. It goes both ways!

Carbs = happy brain

Posted in Training  :  Dec 28, 2010 5:06pm
In my past posts I've talked about carb cycling for fat loss. I've had great success with carb manipulation, even for gaining lean muscle while keeping my body fat levels quite low. That being said, I haven't done any major carb manipulation so far this summer, and I'm getting good results. Even better, I'm feeling more focused, with more energy and concentration -- in short, I feel like a normal, sane person. Sadly, this is not how I feel when I drop my carbs. I become irritable. I feel lethargic. And I don't have much of an attention span. All of this is bad, since my work requires my mind's...

The Best Cardio for Abs

Posted in Training  :  Dec 28, 2010 5:06pm
Answer: The cardio you do. Whether it be running, cycling, swimming, elliptical, jumping jacks, complexes with an olympic barbell, skip rope ... So, the "best" cardio is relative to you, and it ultimately comes down to what you enjoy doing the most. Since you need to do cardio consistently to get the best fat loss results, there's no point in doing something you hate --- because the more you hate it, the more you will make excuses not to do it. My preference is running outside. Why? Am I a masochist? Maybe, but that's beside the point. For me, running is meditative. I go for nice qui...
