When I Started:
Jul, 2006
How I Started:
I worked mostly on getting rid of the fat by running 2-3 miles/day 6 days/week. I designed a 150g protein 1400 calorie daily diet consisting of seven 200-calorie meals: 40% protein, 50% carbs, 10% fat. To preserve muscle tissue I constructed a split weight training routine working out 6 days/week, 2 muscle groups and abs per day.
Why I Love It:
I love the instant credibility with my patients who are in dire need of weight loss to eliminate their obesity and manage their diabetes, hypertension and/or hyperlipidemia. My story and photos inspire them, they say, giving them an opportunity to discuss with an actual dietitian who once struggled with meal-skipping, daily restaurant eating and poor exercise habits. I've seen higher rates of weight-loss success among my patients over the past 2 years. I also love the way my fitness has taken 10 years off my appearance and makes me feel healthier.
How I Stay Motivated:
My patients keep me motivated. I would never want to revert back to the way I was and lose my credibility with them.
BB Accomplishments:
Keeping my body fat at 7%, training for and running the 2007 Army 10 mile race in 1 hour and 20 minutes while not losing lean muscle mass.

Taken the same day as my other 2006 vacation photo, it shows me giving a smooch to my then-girlfriend (now ex). Rarely do we see our own profile shot, and what a shock it was for me to see that not only did I have a double-chin, but also no more jaw-line and no neck!
This photo was taken as a visual baseline prior to training for the Mr. Fort Stewart body building competition in Georgia for Army Soldiers. Because the competition, originally scheduled for Oct 08, was postponed another 2 months, I wasn't able to compete due to my transfer to Ft. Sam Houston, TX, ...

I turn 40 years old in 2009 and I want to compete as a novice in the 40+ category, demonstrating to my patients that if I could lose and maintain weight at my age, then they can also.
Weight Goal:
I want to LOSE 5 lb
Bodyfat Goal:
5%

Hi Mike,
I enjoyed reading your site. I am considering joining the army for the dietitian program. Would you recommend it? What are the pros and cons?
Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
Been hitting it hard, have upped my cardio and really paying attention to the diet. I need to find a new breakfast though, I have been hitting granola cereal and don't think i get enough protein from that. Hate to take the time to cook eggs, so will have to try a new alternative.
39......Here is a group that you might be interested in..."New Over 40 Athletes"
I'm not sure what the benefit of the belonging to a group is. But this caught my eye so I joined.
How is the running going?
