I signed up for Beginning Weightlifting my sophomore year in high school. I had never lifted weights before and I was really weak. However, I kept at it, learned good form, and made some real gains during the three months of the class.
I took another class my junior year and then joined the crew team (rowing) in college. Weightlifting was a key component of our training.
After graduating from college in 1997, my weightlifting and just exercise in general became really sporadic. I had stints of three or four months where I'd get back into it, but it didn't last. Now I'm serious about getting in shape and staying that way.
Why I Love It:
I'm a very goal-oriented person, so I enjoy participating in an activity that is so easily measurable. I also feel good about my fitness and it's a great stress reliever.
How I Stay Motivated:
I think back to the times when I was really out of shape and vow not to let that happen again. I also want to be a good example to my boys.
BB Accomplishments:
Umm, I'm not a bodybuilder, but I do have a few accomplishments that stand out. In college I could bench press my body weight, squat 1.5 times my body weight, and do 20 pullups. Those are some benchmarks I'd like to reach again.
Bench: 225 x 5. Squat: 275 x 10. Deadlift 225 x 10. Pullups: BW x 15. Make BodySpace the best social fitness site on the planet!
Goal (Long):
I want to bench press 225 x 5, squat 275 x 10, deadlift 225 x 10, and do 15 body weight pullups. I also want to do laundry on my washboard abs... umm, when I get them, of course. And I want to improve my endurance for running, skiing, biking, and other sports.
In my day job at Bodybuilding.com, I want to continue to make BodySpace the best social fitness site on the planet with many new and improved features in 2009 and beyond.
Nick allows nothing to get in the way of his goals. Through his motivational speaking, he has become an excellent role model for young people (and all people for that matter).
Do you have any type of chronic disease or condition?
Yes
What is it?
Hypothyroid
How does fitness help you with your condition? What do you have to do differently in your program since you have this condition?
Fitness helps to mitigate the condition, but I'll always need medication. I'm fortunate that my case is mild.

Since you've been working out, taking supplements and eating right, how often do you get sick (cold, flu, etc.)?
Rarely

How many reps per set do you usually do? Why?
For major lifts such as bench press or squat, I do 4 sets of 6 reps because this is within the range that builds muscle. For supplementary lifts such as pullups and dips, I do 3 sets of 10 because the relevant body parts have already been worked by at least one major lift. For major lifts such as bench press or squat, I do 4 sets of 6 reps because this is within the range that builds muscle. I hardly noticed that I haven't written a blog post in more than a month. Time flies when you're having fun, right? As usual I've been really busy at work, at home, and in the gym. I'll share a bit about that last item.
After being sick a couple times in March, I've really come back with...
hey bro thanks for the add and the compliment . I have a workout journal if you want to subscribe. its one part inspiration (so you can see how the story continues) and 1 part workouts stats and routines and 1 part random funny stuff related to the gym. have a look see if you want ...so how si your training going?
I've been following your stats updates but thought I'd drop a line to see how you think things are going. Your at nearly your heaviest bodyweight - I hope it's solid as you've planned it to be. How're are the new PR goals coming along?
Great work on the 1RM maxes (maxs?) and it looks like you're weight is moving upwards again which I'm sure is a good sign. I'm looking forward to the new BBSpace features, too! Keep pushing!
Well I haven't hit that record. Just BodySpace's estimate of my 1RM is over my goal. I want 225 lbs x 5 or something by the end of the year, and it is in sight...
Thanks for the comment...
